The DecadeLong Scandal that Makes Enron Look Like Small Potatoes dmoz in Tobacco Shopping Supplies Directory

Enron is just one tiny example of what happens when giant corporations run the government and set the entire regulatory and legal agenda. Corporations have the final say over Congress and its legislation, not the other way around. Enron proves that but it is only the latest proof. Of course, when an Enrontype scandal comes to the forefront, Congress always pretends to be shocked, but it knows exactly what is going on. In fact, members of Congress spend more time endorsing checks and depositing the political contributions from characters such as Enron than they do in exercising their oversight responsibilities over agencies such as the SEC, the FTC, and the FDA. But as long as Congress and the President are in one of their were shocked modes, they ought to look at our longest running scandal. Thats the tobacco companies, which still escape virtually all regulation, and are now killing over four million people a year worldwide, over 400,000 in the U.S. alone, and will be killing an estimated 8.4 million people worldwide every year by 2020.
