Approximately half of all patients at St Jamess Hospital, Dublin are there due to smokingrelated illnesses, Prof Luke Clancy, respiratory consultant has told the Oireachtas mmittee. The cost of treating these patients is estimated at £90million. Such figures are not exclusive to St Jamess, however, but are typical of most major hospitals, Prof Clancy said. One illion people or 30 percent of the Irish population smoke and every year over 7,000 people die from smokingrelated diseases. Many more are left disabled. Prof Clancy referred to smoking as the scourge of the 21st century and said that more money needs to be allocated to edical treatment of cancer and health awareness about the dangers of smoking as the message does not seem to be getting through.
